What role do territorial males play in locating nesting activity?
They perch conspicuously on prominent objects to guard resources and mate.
While the females handle the tasks of fiber collection and nest provisioning, the males of *Anthidium manicatum* are highly active in defending the immediate vicinity of these reproductive efforts. Male Wool Carder Bees exhibit strong territoriality. They select highly visible, prominent objects within the environment—such as a conspicuous flower head, a tall blade of grass, or even a fence post—to perch upon. From this vantage point, they guard the area against rival males and watch for approaching females with whom they intend to mate. Therefore, observing an aggressive male defending a small patch of flowers strongly suggests that nesting activity is occurring extremely close by.
