What anatomical feature caused the generic name Xenotarsosaurus to mean 'strange tarsus lizard'?
Complete fusion of the astragalus and calcaneum
The generic name *Xenotarsosaurus* is derived from Greek words that translate to 'strange tarsus lizard,' directly referencing a unique characteristic found in the ankle bones (tarsus) of the holotype specimen PVL 612. This strangeness is defined by the complete fusion of the astragalus and calcaneum bones, meaning no separating sutures are present between them. Furthermore, these fused bones subsequently joined with the widened lower end of the tibia. This specific configuration of the ankle structure is considered the most significant characteristic derived from the recovered fossils and was the primary anatomical justification used by the describers for establishing the new genus, establishing a key similarity to *Carnotaurus sastrei*.
