Where was the mouth structure of Wiwaxia situated on its body?
On the underside of its body
The feeding apparatus of Wiwaxia presented another puzzle for early paleontologists. Investigations into the anterior end revealed that its mouth was located ventrally, meaning it was situated on the underside of the creature's body, closer to the seabed than to the dorsal surface. This mouth structure was often noted to be encircled by distinct, fleshy lobes or tentacles. The absence of sophisticated, hardened jaws or specialized grasping appendages suggests a less predatory, more generalized feeding strategy, possibly involving the scraping of microbial mats or algae directly off the seafloor, or perhaps acting as a filter feeder capturing organic material suspended in the water column near the bottom.
