In terms of size among common North American bullheads, how does *A. natalis* compare?
Generally the smallest of the common bullheads.
The Yellow Bullhead is recognized for being generally the smallest species among the common North American bullheads. The majority of individuals encountered by those observing or fishing for them measure under 12 inches in length. Although the species is capable of reaching larger dimensions, the maximum recorded total length is approximately 18 inches, with weights sometimes approaching 4.5 pounds, these larger specimens are the exception rather than the rule. This size limitation influences its ecological role; consistently capturing bullheads near 16 inches or greater suggests the presence of Brown or Black Bullheads, as *A. natalis* tends to reach its size maturity earlier and at a smaller maximum.
