The consumption of seeds, particularly high-fat varieties like sunflower seeds and safflower seeds, poses a severe long-term threat to the Eclectus parrot because their digestive system is not adapted to high-lipid intake. Excessive fat intake from seeds leads directly to hepatic lipidosis, which is commonly identified as fatty liver disease. This condition involves the pathological accumulation of lipids within the liver tissue, significantly impairing organ function. In Eclectus parrots, this failure scenario often progresses silently under the surface of an outwardly active bird, only presenting symptoms when the damage is extensive and potentially irreversible, ultimately shortening the bird’s lifespan considerably.
